Building School 2.0: Moving from Theory to Practice to Build the Schools We Need
Listen to any popular speaker or pick up any book on the topic of education and you will find cries of panic that we are preparing students for jobs that don't even exist yet. This keynote will focus on the fact that this has always been the case. While we have never and will never have a crystal ball to predict the future needs of education, we know what we need to build modern schools. Through inquiry-driven, project-based learning we can build schools that celebrate experiences, curiosity, persistence, and collaboration. We can build schools that recognize and value the humanity of the children and adults they contain. We can build modern schools.

'Not My Old English Teacher'
I'm not an expert, but I'm learning! After 27 years in the classroom doing things the "proficeint" way, I started over in a new district, new subject, new grade level. I am learning new techniques, using new tools and enjoying my career more than ever! Using Twitter for PD on demand, and "pirating" ideas from folks like Alice Keeler, Dave Burgess (Teach Like a Pirate), Tood Nesloney, and Matt Miller (Ditch That Textbook), I have found myself in a position to share what I am learning!
This semester, my seniors are reading "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch. Each class is compiling an eBook using Google Slides to share with the other classes. They will use a google form to evaluate the work of 72 students and their work will be seen and evaluated by 72 students as well as selected administrators. My juniors are replacing the standard dreaded research project with researching biographies and compiling children's books & games for the 3rd grade students on our elementary campus! We will finish off our project with a trip to the Elementary School to share these with their intended audience...Instant feedback!!
My intentions for this session are to work other teachers through the process of getting these lessons started, getting students involved, and presentation/evaluation of finished products.

Pwning the Humanities: Gamification in the Classroom
Recent trends in education are demanding individual differentiation for students, but the only answers are layered tools atop existing curriculum and classroom structures. Gamification offers an opportunity to redefine the way we run classrooms, providing diverse challenges for more engaged students with multiple dimensions of differentiations (addressing pace, choice, and ability) as well as an assessment system focusing on mastery of skills instead of punishment for mistakes. Students' feelings of stress and anxiety diminish in such a context because the desire to keep trying and to level up replace any extraneous fears about failing. Come learn how structural gamification redefines the relationship of student, teacher, and curriculum, and how you can immediately implement its strategies in a session that includes hands-on time to discover your own gamified route.

Collaboration, Community, & Joy
Growing from a shared interest to try something “new,” three teachers at different schools experimented to understand the organic but deliberate aspects of collaboration made possible by technology. Modeling what we were learning about collaboration, students engaged in unexpected conversations across campuses, showcased their learning through multiple media, and inspired critical thinking in all involved, demonstrating the relationship between teaching practices and student habits of mind. Students were empowered to formulate questions for real audiences, to understand through practice the relationship between purpose, audience, and word, and to analyze, create, and synthesize ideas through multiple modes of communication, all on the social space of the internet. We want to share that story – both its successes and false starts.
Our conversation also addresses one the largest elephants in the room: what it feels like to take the risk of collaborating with others. Standing in the way of successful collaboration is a tremendous amount of ungrounded fear and anxiety that no one wants to name, and that’s a conversation we’ll be exploring. What did it feel like to collaborate, to yield, to think together? How do we get past our anxieties to connect to collaborative communities of joy?
